How we work with Your Child
How will your child be referred?
Pupils are usually referred to the TLG Centre by their school or the local authority. This happens when they have decided that additional intervention is needed to meet your child’s needs and help them make progress.
- As their parent or carer, you will be required to attend a pre-admission interview at TLG along with your child and a representative from their school.
- During this meeting you will discuss your child’s needs and the expectations and boundaries they will experience at the TLG Centre.
TLG is not meant to be a long-term solution for your child and it is our intention to equip them to move on and succeed - either back into mainstream school, or onto college, training or employment.
What does the school day look like?
A typical day at a TLG Reading looks like this:

- 9:40am - Break
- 9:50am - Lesson 2: Online Learning
- 10:20am - Break

What happens after school?
TLG operates a range of extended school programmes where pupils can continue to engage and learn beyond the school day and during the holidays. These might include breakfast clubs and workshops in sports, media, arts and music. TLG also runs social and cultural trips and visits including weekend residentials within the UK and international trips which in the past have included Uganda and Ghana.

After School Cafe 16:00-17:00 every Thursday
Each week we will be serving yummy snacks, playing pool and chilling out to music. We also have computers that you can use for your homework and a sports hall for some footy and hockey.
Behaviour, attendance and special educational needs
At TLG we regularly work with young people who have particular educational, social, emotional and behavioural needs, including those for whom English is a second language.
Our learning environment is structured with clear boundaries. TLG Centre rules and behaviour principles are set out in a ‘contract’ that your child will sign before they start at TLG.
- Young people identify and set targets in areas that cause issues for them and support is given to help them improve.
- Staff promote and reward positive behaviour, and address bad behaviour with clear and consistent sanctions. We will encourage your child to learn that their choices carry consequences and hope to see them modify their behaviour accordingly.
- Occasionally a pupil’s actions require us to exclude them for a fixed period. When this happens, TLG will provide access to learning that they can do while at home. Following an exclusion, we would usually ask you and your child to attend a reintegration meeting at the TLG Centre before their return.
- Pupils are supervised at all times whilst at the Centre.
We believe that good attendance is a key to achievement and will work hard with you and your child to overcome any barriers to good attendance.
Pupils are expected to attend all sessions (morning and afternoon) in their TLG programme, unless absence has been authorised by TLG or your child’s referring school. As parent or carer, you will need to provide a reason for any absence and should telephone the Centre at the start of the school day to inform staff.
Special Educational Needs
Our small groups and high staff-pupil ratios provide a setting where your child will be accepted and cared for while being supported and challenged.We tailor the learning and level of support for each individual, giving your child the best chance of making progress and achieving success.
At TLG we are committed to working together to create an environment where no form of bullying is tolerated. We will encourage and help pupils to treat each other with respect and kindness, challenge any bullying we see or hear and impose appropriate sanctions for bullying.

If you tell us your child is being bullied we will deal with it quickly, sensitively and effectively and help ensure that the bullying does not continue. We will support your child while the issue is being dealt with and afterwards.

Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people as defined for the purposes of this summary as: protecting children and young people from maltreatment; preventing impairment of children’s health or development; ensuring that children are growing up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care; and taking action to enable all children to have the best outcomes.
Staff recruitment, induction and training
TLG follows a recruitment process that makes sure all appropriate checks are carried out on staff and volunteers to ensure they are suitable to work with children and young people.
- Before beginning any work at TLG where they will have regular and sustained contact with children, all staff and volunteers are checked through the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). TLG renews these checks every 3 years.
- This includes a check of the ‘Children’s Barred List’ and ‘Prohibition Order List’ to ensure that they have not been barred from teaching or working with children and young people.
- In addition, all staff have had checks made to confirm their identity, qualifications and right to work in the UK.
- References are taken which include questions about the person’s suitability to work with children and young people.
- All visiting staff from other organisations (e.g. drug worker, sports coaches), have also been properly vetted by their employers and confirmation of this is held in TLG records.
All new staff undergo an induction programme, where they become familiar with policies and procedures relating to safeguarding and welfare issues, such as health and safety, first aid, bullying and child protection. All TLG staff receive refresher training in safeguarding annually.
Child Protection Policy
Each TLG Centre has a child protection policy and procedures in place that are in accordance with locally agreed inter-agency procedures. This includes having a Designated Officer who is specially trained to deal with child protection concerns and liaise with other agencies as necessary.
The Child Protection Policy outlines the action staff should take if they are concerned that a child or young person is suffering significant harm or is likely to do so, and the action that should be taken to promote the welfare of a child in need of additional support, even if they are not suffering harm or are at immediate risk.
Procedure for dealing with allegations of abuse made against staff or volunteers
TLG has a policy for dealing with allegations of abuse made against staff or volunteers. These procedures comply with the Government’s statutory guidance and locally agreed inter-agency guidance. Policy review and availability
TLG’s policies and procedures relating to Safeguarding and welfare are reviewed and updated at least annually and are available at the bottom of this page or upon request from any member of TLG staff.
At TLG, we work to provide high quality guidance for pupils and their families in relation to the dangers of the online digital world. We also provide guidance and support to help stay safe and avoid these risks and dangers.

E-Safety in School
- As part of the ICT curriculum, pupils learn about what information should not be shared in a public domain and how to recognise the importance of privacy settings so that important information cannot be accessed by unknown individuals.
- As well as this, pupils are educated about Internet etiquette and guidelines that should be adhered to on social networking sites. PSHE is also a key area where pupils are educated about E-Safety, the dangers associated with Internet browsing and the consequences of inappropriate behaviour online.
- Social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter continue to grow in terms of its popularity especially with children, some as young as 7 or 8 years old. Please click on the links below which aim to provide support regarding a range of key topics in relation to social networking.
Top Tips for Parents and Carers
- Ensure the computer is kept in an area of the house where it is easy to monitor what your children are accessing online.
- Make the most of Internet filtering software and use your web browser’s controls to enable security on different websites.
- Inform your children not to share their personal information online.
- Create a "code of conduct" where your children are involved in creating rules which must be abided by when using the Internet at home.
- Be online together! Browsing the Internet with your child and being involved in their ‘online world’ will promote online safety.
